The tourism sector in Portugal recorded growth, also influenced by the Easter calendar.

On 15 May, the National Statistics Institute (INE) released data on tourism activity in Portugal in the first quarter of 2025, revealing an evolution compared to the same period last year.

According to the report, the tourist accommodation sector recorded 5.7 million guests and 13.4 million overnight stays, which represents variations of +2.3 per cent in the number of guests when compared to the first quarter of 2024. These results come after a very positive last quarter of 2024.

International markets continued to represent the majority of tourist demand, with 67.9 per cent of overnight stays.

In regional terms, the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood out as the most dependent on international tourism, with 85.2 per cent of overnight stays attributed to non-residents, followed by the Algarve, with 81.2 per cent. On the other hand, the Centre (24.3%) and the Alentejo (31.2%) had the lowest levels of external dependence.

Greater Lisbon remained the country’s main tourist destination, concentrating 28.3 per cent of all overnight stays, followed by the Algarve (18.6 per cent) and the North (18.0 per cent). Overnight stays from non-residents were particularly concentrated in Greater Lisbon, which accounted for 32.9% of the total.
