Tourist activity in the 1st quarter of 2025 recorded an increase in the number of guests

The tourist accommodation sector recorded 5.7 million guests and 13.4 million overnight stays in the 1st quarter of 2025, corresponding to variations of +2.3% and -0.5% respectively (+6.6% and +4.6%, in the same order, in the 4th quarter of 2024).

 

External markets dominated, accounting for 67.9% of the total, and overnight stays from residents increased by 3.6% to 4.3 million.

 

In the 1st quarter, Madeira was the region that was most dependent on external markets in terms of overnight stays and Greater Lisbon was the region that concentrated the largest number of overnight stays.

 

By market, Spain was the main source for five regions: Oeste e Vale do Tejo (21.9% of overnight stays from non-residents), Centro (20.5%), Alentejo (18.1%), Norte (17.1%) and Peninsula de Setúbal (15.3%). The United Kingdom was the main market in the Algarve (30.1%) and Madeira (26.0%), while the United States led the way in the Azores (19.6%) and Greater Lisbon (13.4%).
